21 Long Island communities have joined New York State’s Pro-Housing Communities Program:

These 21 communities have sent letters to the State certifying their intent to apply for designation as a Pro-Housing Community. This designation is dependent on each municipality showing dedication to constructing housing by either permitting 1% more housing over the past year, or 3% over the past three years.

Why is this important?

Pro-Housing communities now receive priority consideration for any New York State grants, including the Main Street NY grant, Downtown Revitalization Initiative Grants, and the Long Island Investment Fund.

These grants all together work to improve quality of life in our communities, such as the streetscape improvements made in Westbury through the DRI grant, and Central Islip’s recent sewer expansion along Carleton Avenue.

How can you help?

Many Towns on Long Island have still not applied for the Pro-Housing Communities Program, but every community on the island is facing rising rental and home prices. For Long Island to become an affordable place to live it is critical that every town and community works to promote housing. Without it, Long Island will not have a future.

We need members of each community to work to get their Town, Village or City to sign up to be a pro-housing community, write to your local municipality today and ask them to join the Pro-Housing Communities Program.
